Happy 9th Birthday Munchkinman!!!

Well, it was 9 years ago today that my fabulous son came into this world. He is a wonderful child that deserves a wonderful party, and this year was no exception. This year, the theme was Luau complete with the ocean (local swimming pool that we rented) pineapple, and a roast pig (the birthday cake). Chase had 40 or so of his closest friends in attendance and a great time was had by all!

We began by greeting everyone with leis. Let me tell you about those leis. My husband is a genius!!! I failed to by boxes of leis this summer when all the party stores had them relatively cheap. Well, in the winter, you can only by the leis individually, which, when there are 40-50 kids invited, can be expensive. As we were wandering aimlessly through the party store, Robert had a flash of brilliance. The store had doorway flower curtains made out of the same flowers as the leis for sale and he thought that it would be really easy to take them apart and make them into leis. Since the leis themselves were $1.50 each and the curtains were $4.99, it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that this would be more cost effective. We were able to get about 25 leis out of each curtain and had more than enough for our guests. Plus, it was very easy to do and we made them while watching tv at night. Even Chase was able to make them. Way to go BOB!!!

Our invitations were surfboards that we made ourselves also. This was also a family project that was basically completed on evening during Thanksgiving. It took Bob, Angela and I to do it, but they were all done in a matter of hours. Then we, Chase and I, typed up the Party info so it would fit on the boards and found some Hawaiian phrases to include and took them to Kinko’s to print on clear labels. They were sooooo cute, I hated to give them away!

I made the roast pig cake and Timon on top. The surfboard is one of the invitations with the front label pulled off. The cake was chocolate with raspberry curd, which of course I made myself. We also had jello aquariums, though a word of advice should you ever make them, don’t use nerds. They give a dirty take kind of look…Still yummy, but not as cute.

This was the easiest birthday party we have had so far! Everyone had a blast at being able to swim in December and the pool area was nice and warm, though I heard from adults that the water was a little cool. Didn’t seem to bother the kids one little bit!

I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Cupcakes, Cupcakes, Cupcakes

Well, this semester of Kids in the Kitchen has been really eventful. So eventful in fact that I have not had the time to post all of the wonderful things we have been doing. Luckily, the holidays are upon us and that means time to blog to my heart’s content.  I will start with our most recent project and work backwards over the next few weeks.

It was cupcake time for my class and we thought that we would share our creations with the school during our Mercado event. Two of the classrooms combine to do a cake walk and so we donated a portion of our product to them.

I broke up the class into groups and each group made a box (yes we use box mix for these) of cake mix into cupcakes. I use box mix because I want them to learn that you can do wonderful things with prepackaged items. For example, two groups made marble cupcakes, one group did chocolate cherry cupcakes, one group added lemon curd to their lemon cupcakes and the last group added chocolate chips to their chocolate cake mix. What did our cupcakes look like you ask? Well they were adorable, of course!!!

We made penguins, icebergs, popcorn, ornaments and worms in dirt. Unfortuately, I can only find pictures of the penguins and popcorn, but I will look for the others and add them if I find them. They did a great job and had a great time doing it. I do think that the penguins were my favorite.

Happy Birthday Andrea!!!

I just wanted to wish Andrea a very happy 30th birthday. For those of us who know and love her, it is hard to believe that she turns 30 tomorrow. I know that she will have a wonderful birthday surrounded by friends and loved ones and fabulous cupcakes. Happy birthday!!

See What You Missed Jules!!!

The Smorgashbord

So, we have this family friend that had two daughters graduate from college-different colleges, different weekends, same month- and she wanted to have a HUGE graduation party for them. Could I make cupcakes for them, she asked. Of course I would, I mean I had only grown up with these girls, and plus, I heard a rumor that they thought my lemon cupcakes were to die for. How could I refuse???

Then she sprung it on me….300 cupcakes, various flavors, needed Sunday. WOW! I have never made that many cupcakes in my kitchen. Where on Earth would I put them all? Luckily, there is a little cupcake shop right down the street that would sell me containers that would hold a dozen cupcakes and stack neatly. Problem solved. Let the baking begin.

It took all day Friday to bake the cupcakes. I made lemon, strawberry, chocolate cinnamon, rocky road (chocolate cake with mini marshmallows bake inside), white cake with Andes candies baked in, and a plain chocolate cake.

Saturday and Sunday I decorated them all. Now I could have decorated them all on Saturday but keeping them cool in the hot house was an issue and the lemon ones had a lemon cream cheese icing and I didn’t think that food poising was really an appropriate gift for the girls, so I left those for Sunday. I also made peanut butter icing for the plain chocolate cake. (I call those E.T., see if you can figure out why) I decided that no graduation party was complete without chocolate mortar boards so I decorated the mint cupcakes that way. You can see from the pictures that they came out really cute!

A great time was had by all that attended and the cupcakes were a huge hit! Congratulations Margaretta and Charlene!!!

Fear is not a Factor

So, for my son’s 7th birthday, he wanted a Fear Factor party complete with all the disgustingness of the tv show.  Easy as pie!

We started out with the invitations. Unfortuantely, I don’t have a picture of them on my computer but I will tell you about them. We cut flags out of yellow plastic material. Anyone who watched the show knows that it is all about the contestants retireving the flags. Hubby carefully ironed on the words “Fear Factor” to 40+ flags. Attached to the flags was a notecard sized invitation that was covered in worms- well pictures of worms actually- along with all of the pertinant information. They were totally cool! Props to the hubby for his creativity!

We lucked out that his birthday falls after Halloween becuase all the leftover candy is on sale. There were gummy bugs and body parts and eyeballs- all required eating for such a party. Of course, we did have to order some additional candy online because you just can’t find crunchy bugs at the store these days. We also ordered an asortment of fake bugs to put in the punch and stuff like that.

We had a great game that we played, which of course involved sticking your hands into all sorts of goo. It went like this:

First, you went to the big lexan that held way to much goo (cornstarch, water and blue food coloring). For parents, this is a scary enough proposition. The kids search thru the goo to find a small piece of paper that has a color on it. This color corresponds with the next part of  the game.

The kids then went to the table that held 4 black containers of other nasty goo protected by a giant bug (which would be door prizes later). They matched their paper to the bucket and stuck their hand in to retrieve a coin with a number on it. This would be used for the next game. The buckets contained either fish eyeballs (blueberry pie filling), smooshed brains (soggy oatmeal), arteries (spaghetti noodles and oil) or human eyeballs (grapes in oil). The kids loved it and the parents stared at us in disbelief that we would encourage all this messiness without the slightest concern that our house could be covered in sticky fingerprints. We did take that into consideration and had a bucket of soap and water that all little hands must use immediately following the bucket experience.

The kids would then take the number over to the tic tac toe game. We actually modified it to have pictures of frogs, bugs, eyeballs, spiders, etc that matched our candy. Kids were trying to get as much candy as they could. It was a huge hit!

We also had the kiddos make thier own party hats. I hate to buy party hats, and as I am a crafty person, I always try to have the kids make their own. Besides that, it gives them something to do while we wait for everyone else to arrive and the party begins. This year they made bug eyes. They were incredibly cute!!

Food is another important aspect of these parties. We had tarantula jigglers, bug punch, and a cockroach cake. We also had more normal fare such as pigs in blankets, baked beans and cheese ball puffs.

Cockroach cake

Some of our goodie bags had papers for door prizes in them. The winners got either one of the large bugs that were guarding the goo buckets or a Fear Factor prize that we ordered online from thier site. It was a fabulous time!
